Energy label G

Energy label G

The least favorable energy label is energy label G. This label is very inefficient and causes high energy costs. Moreover, an energy label G will not have a positive influence on the value of your home. By requesting an energy label you can discover which classification your home falls into. This way you know exactly what actions you can take to make your home more sustainable and save on your housing costs in the long term. In this article we zoom in on the meaning and conditions of the lowest energy label.

What does energy label G mean?

Energy label G is the least favorable energy label. Homes with this label often were built before the war and, as a rule, no energy-saving interventions have been made in the past fifty years. A house with a G label often shows the following characteristics:

  • Very low insulation value: The house has little insulation, which means a lot of heat is lost. This may be the case, for example, in older homes with single glazing or poorly insulated walls and roofs.
  • Poor or missing ventilation: The home has poor ventilation, which means that little fresh air enters and moisture and mold can develop.
  • No sustainable generation: The home uses fossil fuels, such as gas or oil, for heating and hot water.
  • Very high energy bill: The energy bill of the home is high because a lot of energy is used for heating and hot water.
  • Outdated heating system: The house has outdated heating and hot water systems, such as an old central heating boiler or an electric boiler.

The energy label G is extremely unfavorable. The energy consumption of homes with this label is unnecessary and very high. This is often clearly noticeable in the wallet and daily living comfort.

Conditions for an energy label G

A house or apartment with the most unfavorable energy label G consumes more than 380 kWh per m2 per year. This is a consumption of no less than twice or more than the energy consumption of a home with energy label A.

How do I get a higher label than an energy label G?

It is good to know that there are many options to improve energy label G. Here are some suggestions:

  • Installing double or HR glazing;
  • Installing draft strips, curtains, radiator foil and floor coverings;
  • Purchasing a heat pump or solar boiler;
  • Improving insulation by, for example, cavity wall, roof and floor insulation;
  • Installing solar panels on the roof.

However, it can be difficult to determine which solutions fit within your budget and in some homes it is not possible to take certain measures. Nevertheless, certain measures can be taken and investments in energy efficiency will actually yield money in the long term. These efforts increase the value of the home, reduce gas and electricity bills and improve living comfort.
